Cooperative Collects Award For Washed Organic Coffee

 

Kaleb has contributed a significant part in providing quality coffee for the world and for helping farmers produce standard varieties   of organic coffee. Kaleb has been recognized in the world of coffee production and market both locally and internationally. Of the various awards which Kaleb had collected ,the IFOAM competition award is one. Fero and its environs peasants cooperative in Sidama zone of SNNPS collected the award it secured for standing first at the 3rd washed organic coffee testing contest held in Uganda .

While handing out the award to the association in Fero Woreda, Tesfaye Tekele Haimanot, Manager of Kaleb Company that is supplying the coffee to the international market, said that the Frero coffee ranked first from among washed organic coffee brought by more than 20 companies from different coffee growing African countries.

The result of the competition would encourage the association to focus on quality, Tesfaye said, adding that it would also have significance in increasing demand for Ethiopian coffee in international market, and  Cooperative chairman Kifle Lankamo said giving training to the members and working in collaboration with agricultural professional enabled to achieve the result.

He said the association is growing coffee on 1,887 hectares of land and owns three product–refining centers. It supplies an average of 30,000 quintals of washed organic coffee annually to the international market, Kifle added. Cooperative General manager Endeshaw Janjie on his part said, that demand for the produce of cooperative has been increasing as it focused on quality. Established in 1977 with 43,000 birr capital by 53 members, the Fero areas peasants' cooperative has at present more than two million birr capital and 2,900 members, it was learnt.
